Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for hours when multiple of them floated into the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend passed through the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and near the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves especially affected by weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that this activity become unprofitable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Recent incidents in nearby states have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
